How to Hang Frames

HELPFUL TOOLS & MATERIALS:

Hammer
Nails
Tape Measure
24" Level
Pencil
String
Pushpins

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Determine a location. Pictures are usually hung at eye level, but feel free to use other heights that work well for you. Keep in mind that the height and width of furniture and draperies may affect your frame arrangement. Be sure to consider this as you choose a location for your frames.

2. Establish your collection. Before hanging your frames on the wall, plan your arrangement on the floor to get an idea of what looks good to you. Try several different layouts until you find the one that you like the most. Refer to Figures A and B or the box front for layout ideas.

3. Take measurements. Follow this easy rule to determine the height at which your frames could be hung: Divide the height of the frame by 2, subtract the distance of the top of the frame to the hanging device. Add this number to average eye level. The sum is the height at which the hanger should be nailed to the wall.

4. Hints for hanging

  • When hanging frames in a line, hang the middle frame first and work outwards for a centered and equally spaced arrangement.
  • Use a level, tape measure and pencil to mark flat, even heights on the wall.
  • Create a straight line between two points by pulling a piece of string tightly between two pushpins. This will serve as a guide when hanging frames at the same height.
